I had the pleasure and the privilege of seeing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in IMAX 3D last night at midnight, which meant that I saw the nine minute prologue of J.J. Abrams’ upcoming blockbuster sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. My Hobbit review should be up in the next day or two after I view the film in its 48 FPS format.
So… Star Trek! What did I think of the film’s first nine minutes? I can definitely say that they know what they are doing with this sequel. It starts off in a rather rapid manner, quickly establishing that its London in Stardate 2599 and we meet a family man played by Noel Clarke. I will refrain completely from spoilers so all I will say is that this first segment of the prologue introduces and emotional conflict with a tease of some sort of proposal to prevent a tragedy. We cut to a thrilling turn of events and we are introduced to some very familiar characters and shown a rapid fire (quite literally), intense sequence that sets everything into gear. We then see a thirty second teaser real followed by the Star Trek Into Darkness popping up on screen.
Its a hell of a way to promote the film and at this point, I just don’t see it suffering from the sequel slump that past releases such as Iron Man 2 and The Hangover part II provided. The first thing that really caught my eye was the cinematography and art direction. Abrams really has an eye for color patterns in a few particular shots of the intro. Its bright and catchy to the eyes, and in so many ways adds a marvelous touch the shooting style for this film. All the fast paced excitement and character charm is ever present and quite frankly, May 17th could not come soon enough. Until then, here is the awesome teaser trailer for your geek galore anticipation. The teaser is absolutely wonderful and really drives my hope for this to be a wonderful experience. I’d say about 20 of the 60 seconds of footage shown in the trailer appears in the prologue.
